Make your child aware of his/her nail biting habit. Your child may not even realize how often he is biting nails. Try to spend more time with him/her and help your child become aware of how often he/she is biting nails and the reason for doing so.
To stop this habit in your preschooler, find out the reason behind it. If your child seems to be anxious, scared or nervous about anything, he/she may confess the reason, it can be any trouble in the family, with the new school or anything else.
Try to remove the reason of anxiety or stress that is making your preschooler involved in this habit. Though you may not prevent the family troubles or make a big move, at least you can sit with your child and talk to calm down his/her fears.
Give your child physical reminders. Put some bandage or stickers on the nails so the next time when he/she is reminded of biting, it can also create awareness.
Decide some activity for your child to do whenever he/she feels like biting the nails. For instance, let him hold clay while he/she is involved in any homework activity or watching television. You can also give sugar-free gums to engage them in chewing throughout the day. If your child feels very scary or anxious, tell to discuss their inner feelings with you.
