Gothic Nails

Nails are an integral part of our hands, contributing to the look and appearance of our hands and at times they even representatives our overall personalities as well. Gothic nails represent the Gothic culture and fashion adhering to the varied definitions of the term ‘Goth’. The term has a different meaning to each of its followers although the basic association of Gothic culture is made with being unusual and different from the common patterns. Gothic nails are also part of this ‘different’ style, fashion and culture helping the Goths to separate themselves from their contemporaries.

It is a common belief that Gothic nails are mostly longer than regular nails with a pointed tip, distinguishing the shape of Gothic nails from other styles and patterns. Along with nails the typical Gothic culture and fashion include the usage of black color for their dressing with silver accessories, unique hair styles, body piercing and bondage items. Their fascination with the medieval, Edwardian and Victorian history can be related to the several dark and horror novels and movies representing the Gothic theme. The color black, thus, serves as one of the distinguishing features of all the aspects of Gothic culture, and is used widely for coloring Gothic nails. Nevertheless, it is not the only color that can represent Gothic culture, as personal preferences and tastes dominate the Gothic fashion to a great extent, keeping its basic elements intact.

Contrary to being essentially, Gothic nails can also be of shorter lengths as preferred by a lot of Goths. Depending on the type of your life style you may thus maintain the size of your nails. Gothic nail care is not very different from the regular nail care and can be easily maintained with proper attention to some basic facts affecting the health of your nails. The fact that Gothic nails usually tend to be longer than regular nails make them vulnerable and easily breakable, especially when it comes to the pointed tip of the nails. It is, therefore advisable to keep the length of the nail tip half of the length of the nail bed. However, those who wish to have longer nails can use nylon fibers and nail hardeners to reduce the possibilities of nail breaks.

For filing Gothic nails it is ideal to start from the corner of the tip of each nail and move towards the center. Filing them back and forth or in the ‘see-saw’ motion can cause split and ridges in the nails. Metal filers are not recommended as they are excessively rough on the nails.

Although Gothic nails tend to be pointed in shape, it is not always necessary to maintain such a shape as it tends to become weak. Instead, you can very well go for a shape that suits the shape of your cuticles and compliments the size of your hands. While heavy shaped hand look good with squared-off nails, petite hands compliment long and almond shaped rounded nails.

No matter whatever, the shape and size of your hands and nails and whatever style you choose to enhance the look of your Gothic nails, proper intake of vitamin, calcium and other nutrients are absolutely imperative to keep your nails healthy and trendy.
