Airbrush Guns

Before discussing about airbrush guns, we need to understand what an airbrush is and how it works. An airbrush refers to a small, air-operated tool, spraying different kinds of medium. These might include dye, ink and others but mostly it is used for spraying paint through an atomization process. Airbrush guns or spray guns are developed from the airbrushes, which are still considered as another type of airbrush.

Abner Peeler invented the airbrush in 1879 in Iowa, USA. A hand-operated compressor was used by this first airbrush and was patented by its inventor as a tool for watercolor painting or for painting similar artistic purposes. The techniques of using an airbrush was marketed and taught by Liberty Wilson Irvine after four years from the invention of the device. In 1893, the first modern airbrush came into the market which was invented by Charles Burdick. The modern airbrush resembled a pen and was used differently from that of the first one invented by Peeler. Today, the most refined airbrush guns are manufactured in Japan, the Iwata being one of the most popular brands.

Airbrush guns use the air pressure to spray the paint of the object it is used for painting. While small airbrush guns use as low as 20 psi air pressure, large airbrush guns used for spray painting the automobiles may need even more than 100 psi of air pressure to atomize adequately.

Airbrush guns are also used by skilled artists to produce photographic realism or simulate all kinds of painting medium. Painting with airbrush guns require other supplementary tools such as friskets, masks and also needs a very careful planning.

Air brush guns have also been a popular tool of the nail artists for developing and experimenting with colors and effects to express their innovative ideas on nail art. Airbrush guns have allowed these artists the room and flexibility to explore their imagination to such an extent which never seemed possible before. Several exclusive effects and color combinations to create unique designs and patterns have been a nail artist’s forte which has become possible because of these air brush guns. The popularity of the art can be gazed by the increasing number of people bending towards nail arts and designs by professional nail artists who use air brush guns. Air brush nail art today has become one of the most integral and established part of the beauty and fashion industry. The style conscious customers are continuously served by new and unique air brush nail art by the specialist salons and beauty parlors.

Airbrush guns are classified according to the function and the mechanism used for operating them. The simplest air brush gun needs a single mechanism to feed the paint in the gun where a single ‘trigger’ allows the paint flow. The other type is known as dual action airbrush gun where the action of feeding the paint and activating the paint flow is separated. The third type of mechanism characterizes the action involved in the point at which the paint mixes with the air.
