Clean & Healthy Nails

Nails are considered to be the barometer of our health and thus every beauty care procedure should include adequate nail care. Maintaining clean and healthy nails is as important as the beautification of your skin and hair for enhancing your physical appearance and overall personality. Weak, brittle or discolored nails not only indicate lack of nutrition in your body but they also lead to lack of self confidence while interacting with others or appearing in public places, affecting your personal as well as professional life. Practicing proper nail care can easily help you in maintaining clean and healthy nails which can put you in the best of your appearances when combined with the other health care habits that are already a part of your life.

In order to maintain clean and healthy nails, it is first essential to know what the nails are made up of and what all are needed to maintain the health and cleanliness of the nails. Nails are basically made of keratin (a type of protein, containing fat and water) and amino acids. The ‘lunula’ and the nail plate are the most important parts of the nails. The bottom part of the nail that is nearest to the cuticle is known as the ‘lunula’, which eventually grows to a nail plate to cover the nail bed.

The basic formula of maintaining clean and healthy nails involves trimming and filing nails in the proper way. The length and shape of the nails play an important role in keeping the nails healthy and clean. It is necessary to trim you’re nails after a regular interval so that they do not grow too long and start breaking off. The shape of the nails needs to be squared or rounded off to avoid nail growth problems and other deformities. Trimming of nails need to be followed by a filing done in the same direction rather than moving the filer back and forth. Though the use of nail polish is very popular to enhance the look of the nails, it is advisable keep a significant gap between the usages of nail polishes to allow the nails to breathe. Also, ensure that you do not put thick layers of nail polish which might need a lot of remover to remove them. Too much use of removers tends to make the nails dry and brittle, making them fragile and easily breakable.

To keep the nails clean it is advisable to run warm waters over the nails or soak your hands or toes in warm water for 5 to 10 minutes. It is equally important to dry your hands and toes with a soft towel followed by a gentle massage with a moisturizing lotion to keep them hydrated and soft. The dirt lying underneath the nails can be cleaned off with the help of a wooden stick with a slanted edge. Metal sticks can be harmful and too harsh with the possibilities of hurting the delicate skin around your nails.

Do not forget the dietary requirements contributing to the health of your nails. Drink lots of water and add foods that are rich in calcium, Vitamins, zinc, sulfur, silicon and biotin. Brewer’s yeast, broccoli, fish, soy and whole grains can be very good for strengthening your nails and giving them a healthy glow.
