Matricectomy

Matricectomy is the surgical procedure which is used for removing the nail matrix. This procedure can either remove a section of nail matrix or the entire matrix itself.
It is basically used to treat the ingrown toenails. In case, the ingrown toenails are occurring again and again or they have reached an advanced stage then this procedure is under taken.
There are methods of Matricectomy. These are:
Chemical Matricectomy and Lazer Matricectomy.
- Chemical Matricectomy: In this procedure a chemical agent, like sodium hydroxide is used to treat the ingrown toe nails. The treatment requires, dipping of the nail edges in the chemical solution for 30 minutes. After this span of time, the patient will feel pain and the toe nail will have drainage and tissue damage. Once the drainage stops, whole of the damaged nail along with the tissues is removed from the matrix. Injured matrix is also removed. Then, the operated part is bandaged and left for healing. Healing in case can take a longer time of at least 2 months.
- Lazer Matricectomy: In this method the matrix of the nail is destroyed by YAG laser or carbon di oxide. This is considered as the best method as it has minimal damage to the tissue, pain is also less and recovery is also very fast. Once, avulsion is done, the matrix of the nail is removed completely. In this case the complete loss of nail is there and only the skin is left behind. This technique is mostly used for recurring of the toe nails and deformed nails.
